The Meaning of the Lucky Buddha Statue

Buddha statues are representative of the religious teachings of Siddhartha Gautama and his search for enlightenment. Of the many types of statues available, the Laughing Buddha (statue which appears to be smiling or laughing with a pot-bellied stomach) is said to be lucky. The presence of this statue reflects good fortune and holds both aesthetic and inspirational value to those in its presence.

Who was Buddha?
The term “Buddha” generally refers to an Indian prince named Siddhartha Gautama who lived around 500 BC, whose quest for enlightenment ultimately led him to be called Buddha (meaning “awakened one”). Others have been given this title before, however Siddhartha’s widely taught philosophic teachings have proved so valuable that he is known as “the” Buddha.

Lucky Buddha Statue
Buddha is often depicted in the form of a statue. The Laughing Buddha (or Happy Buddha) is considered to be lucky and will bring about a sense of happiness. The statue often depicts a smiling or laughing Buddha with a large, round belly.

Meaning of Statues
When a Buddha statue is placed in a home, it is said that the statue will bring about good luck and fortune. These statues are also common gift items. The placement of a statue in a public venue is said to bring in good vibes and serve as spiritual inspiration for humans to strive for inner peace and happiness.

Significance of Position and Appearance
Buddha statues often depict the Buddha in a variety of ways, each difference being significant. Most often, statues show Buddha sitting in a meditative position. Other statues depict him on a lotus blossom (symbolizing self-realization) or in a reclining position (symbolizing life’s end on Earth). The Medicine Buddha holds a myrobalan plant in one hand, intended to help heal disease. Half-closed eyes indicate a meditative state and elongated earlobes refer to hearing the world’s needs. Hand gesturing (mudras) typically refers to Buddha’s protection or teaching.

Materials
Many Chinese Buddha statues are hand-carved out of porcelain or ceramic. However, other materials are also used for the making of these statues–including metal, brass, bronze, gold, granite, sandstone and wood.

Chinese Dragon Gifts

The dragon has great symbolic value in Chinese culture. Dragons are regarded as talismans of power, strength and good fortune. In Chinese myth they are depicted as being wise and possessed of magical powers. Dragon-themed gifts, therefore, would be appropriate for many different occasions but especially when you want to wish the receiver good luck, strength and happiness. They are particularly apt during the Year of the Dragon in the Chinese Zodiac Calendar or to someone born in one of those years.

The Year of the Dragon
The Dragon lies fifth in the Chinese Zodiac Calendar, and each year is also associated with an element. The combination can provide good ideas for gifts for people born in the Year of the Dragon. For instance, according to Chinese Zodiac.com, the years 1940 and 2000 were both Metal Dragon years, so an appropriate gift may be a metal figurine, possibly in gold as this is the color associated with that kind of dragon.

Water Dragons (1952) are associated with blue, Wood Dragons (1964) with green, Fire (1976 and 2000) with red, and Earth (1988) with yellow. So pictures, jewelery or statuettes of dragons in these colors are appropriate for someone with those birth years.

As another gift option, arrange to have a full Chinese zodiac reading for the person born in the year of the dragon.

Jade
Because jade is a highly symbolic material in Chinese culture — associated with vivacity, compassion, justice and good luck — a dragon made of jade makes an especially meaningful gift. A jade dragon, new or antique, could take many different forms: jewelery, statuettes, key rings or a wall mounted piece. Antique stores, jewelers or specialist Chinese-themed shops often carry jade objects.

Paintings, Ink Drawings and Images
Depictions of dragons are significant in Chinese culture — it is taboo to deface an image of a dragon. A painting or drawing of a traditional Chinese dragon could be an excellent decorative piece for a home. Chinese dragon imagery adorns everyday objects and is common in popular culture, where it can be seen decorating everything from cars to skateboards and even people’s bodies as tatoos. A specially commissioned artist’s image of a dragon makes an unusual and thoughtful gift.

Calligraphy
Dozens of Chinese Calligraphic characters symbolize “dragon.” You can give a calligraphic depiction of one of these characters on a piece of parchment or rice paper.

Toys, Figurines and Statues
As fixtures of popular culture, dragons appear as everything from stuffed toys to futuristic robots. Figurines and statues of dragons include indoor art or conversation pieces, and marble and stone dragons for outdoor use.

Books
For someone interested in the mythology or art of dragons, “The Handbook of Chinese Mythology” by Lihui Yang and Deming An, “The Chinese Dragon” by L. Newton Hayes or other books can explain the place of the dragon in Chinese culture, provide illustrated and detailed descriptions of Chinese dragons, and explain their meanings and the legends associated with them. You will also be able to find many illustrated collections of translated or simplified Chinese folk tales about dragons, including “A Treasure House of Chinese Fables” by Chi Him Chiu.

How to Repair Broken Plastic Statues

Though usually durable, plastic can occasionally crack or break. Most of us tend to simply throw an item out when this occurs, but repairing broken plastic is not difficult. If you own a plastic statue in disrepair, it can be fixed quickly with your choice of method. You may wish to do this if your statue is rare or has sentimental value. With this knowledge, you may never need to throw out broken plastic again.

Using the Soldering Iron

  1. Clean the broken pieces of plastic thoroughly to remove any oil or debris. Make sure that you have all of the broken pieces and that they form a somewhat close fit when held together.
  2. Heat the soldering iron and cut the ABS into thin strips with the utility knife. When the iron is hot, spot weld the plastic pieces together, starting at the center and working your way toward the ends. Work on one broken section at a time, making sure that the pieces are lined up correctly before welding. Allow each section to cool for 3 to 5 seconds before continuing.
  3. Cut a deep groove into the plastic where you have just welded it together, using the tip of the iron. You will need to go about two thirds of the way through the plastic. Use the iron to melt the ABS strips into the groove, while also slightly melting the sides of the groove. This will ensure a strong connection.
  4. Allow the plastic to cool for at least 10 minutes, then file or sand any excess material from the now repaired crack. If desired, you may paint over the repaired area to cover any discoloration

Bandage Method

  1. Clean the plastic completely, as described in the first step above. Cut a piece of fabric to generously cover the cracked area.
  2. Apply epoxy to the surface of the crack and join the pieces together for a few moments.
  3. Smear one side of the fabric generously with the glue you are using and apply it to the crack like a bandage.
  4. Allow the glue to dry overnight. When finished, you may paint over the repaired area.
